MOT Retest

If an individual fails their MOT test, they can appear for a partial test called an MOT retest. It precludes the need to redo the full checklist and get a pass certificate. Mostly the MOT retest only features those vehicle parts that failed the initial MOT test.

Not being MOT cleared

Having a valid MOT certificate is mandatory by law. Not having an MOT clearance will incur a £1,000 fine. It may be further increased up to £2,500, with a driving ban and 3 penalty points on the driver’s licence (if the vehicle is considered dangerous).

MOT Retest Rules

For an MOT retest, the application must be filed within 3-weeks of the MOT test that the vehicle failed. Also, the rule is to complete the retest within 60 days of the first test. Either way, it must be done asap as one cannot drive with an expired MOT certificate.

Only a single free retest is permitted per failed MOT test. The vehicle can only be driven if the previous year’s MOT certificate is valid and the vehicle is roadworthy. If not, it is to be left parked or to be towed to the centre.

Booking an MOT Retest

There is no booking process as such with the garage doing the partial retest once the repairs are done. Leaving the car for repairs at the garage is the best option.

MOT Retest Cost

The retest costs are subject to the circumstances of the second test.

If the car is left at the garage where the initial test took place, the retest will be completed in 10 business days. There will be no retest costs with the only expenses for the vehicle repairs.

There is the option to get issues fixed elsewhere and return for the test to the same garage for the retest in 1 working day. The retest will remain free in this case if done within the given period.

In case the vehicle is taken to another garage for repairs and then return to the original garage for a retest within 10 business days, there is a partial charge for the retest. It will be half of the full test charge.

Although, there are garages that offer discounted MOT rates, so look around and compare deals.

Upon return to the original garage after 10 business days with repairs done elsewhere complete MOT retest is required at the full price.

For All Other Situations

The complete MOT test is done at full price.

Can an MOT retest be done elsewhere?

No, the retest must be done at the original garage where the MOT initial test took place. The vehicle may be repaired elsewhere, however, a different garage will charge the full fee for the retest. To save on expenses it is prudent to get repairs done at the original garage where the initial MOT test happened.

When is an MOT renewal needed?

Any vehicle in the UK with more than 3 years of registration needs an annual MOT test. The expiration date is on the MOT certificate and it needs to be renewed before that date.
