Every car owner in the UK is legally bound to have their cars in a roadworthy state and get annual MOT clearance. Every car is subject to wear and tear over time and that needs maintenance. Getting a car serviced regularly is not just good for the vehicle but also essential to keep its passengers safe. Other benefits of car maintenance and service are they increase the life of the car which also raises its resale value and better insurance costs.

In this blog, we examine the difference between MOT and car service.

Understanding MOT

The Ministry of Transport test (MOT) is an annual evaluation of any vehicle to ensure it meets the minimum legal requirements of the UK government and is roadworthy. It is for various forms of public and private transport and divided into different categories. The objective of MOT clearance is to make the roads safe by using cars that have cleared the test.

An MOT test involves a comprehensive check of external and internal car parts to determine they perform as per a set government standard. The DVSA has created a checklist to be met for the vehicle to be deemed safe for use on the road. Every vehicle more than 3 years old must get an annual MOT certification. This is to be done before the date of MOT expiration every year. The cost is capped at £58.45 excluding VAT. Some garages offer discounted MOT prices if combined with car service.

Using an expired MOT

Driving with an expired MOT incurs a £1,000 fine and invalidates car insurance. It could also lead to losing points on the driver’s licence and one cannot renew their road tax.

Car Service

While MOT is just about checking the car parts meet a minimum government standard it entails no repairs or maintenance. That is where car service counts as it involves all maintenance and repair work. From repairing and replacing worn out parts to topping up of all kinds of fluids is done during a service. A car service is not mandated by law but is essential to keep the car roadworthy so that it clear MOT. Car services are offered by independent garages and franchises and it is for the owner to decide where the service is to be carried out.

Difference between MOT and car service

A common misconception among quite many vehicle owners is clearing an MOT test is enough without the need for service. However, MOT just checks the basics whereas a service is comprehensive to look for wear and tear and carry out repairs or replacements. If any defects are found during the MOT the vehicle will not clear and fail the tests. Repairs will need to be done and an MOT retest taken that must be cleared to certify. Both MOT and service are essential to keep the car in good shape. Combining a car service with an MOT test is a good idea as it could both save money and ensure the vehicle clears the test in the first attempt.
