History of the car industry in Abergavenny

Abergavenny has a long and proud history of car manufacturing. The town was once home to the renowned Hillman car company, which produced some of the most iconic British cars of the 20th century.

Hillman was founded in 1907 by William Hillman and his brother Harold. The company started out by making bicycles, but soon moved into cars. Their first model, the Hillman Imp, was launched in 1963 and quickly became a best-seller.

The company continued to produce popular cars throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including the Hillman Hunter and the Hillman Avenger. However, the oil crisis of the early 1980s hit the company hard, and it was forced to close its Abergavenny factory in 1981.

Despite the demise of the Hillman company, car manufacturing continued in Abergavenny. In the 1990s, the town was home to the MG Rover factory, which produced the popular MG F and MG TF sports cars.

Sadly, the MG Rover factory closed in 2005, bringing an end to car manufacturing in Abergavenny. However, the town still has a strong connection to the automotive industry, thanks to its world-famous International Rally of Wales, which is held every year.
