The car industry in Royal Leamington Spa can be traced back to the early 1800s, when a local blacksmith named John Cooper began making horse-drawn carriages. In 1825, Cooper's son, Henry, started a business making and selling carriages. In 1833, the Coopers moved their business to a new factory on the outskirts of town, and began making cars for the first time. In the early 1900s, the Coopers began making cars for the British Royal Family, and their business flourished. In the 1920s, the Cooper family sold their business to a group of investors, and the company was renamed the Royal Leamington Spa Car Company. The new company continued to make cars for the British Royal Family, and also began exporting cars to other countries. In the 1930s, the company was taken over by the British government, and during World War II, the factory was used to produce military vehicles. After the war, the company was nationalized, and in the 1950s, it was renamed the British Leyland Motor Corporation. The company continued to make cars until the late 1970s, when it went into receivership. In the 1980s, the company was privatized, and in the 1990s, it was renamed the Rover Group. The Rover Group was later bought by BMW, and today, the factory in Royal Leamington Spa is used to produce Land Rover and Jaguar cars.
