The car industry in Borehamwood can be traced back to the early years of the 20th century, when a number of manufacturers began production in the area. Among the most notable was the British manufacturer Austin, which had a factory in Borehamwood from 1912 onwards. Austin was joined by a number of other companies over the years, including Morris, Ford and Rootes.

In the 1960s, Borehamwood became home to the British Motor Corporation (BMC), which was formed through the merger of Austin and Morris. BMC went on to become one of the UK's leading car manufacturers, producing a number of popular models including the Mini and the Austin-Morris 1100.

BMC was later absorbed into the British Leyland conglomerate, which itself was nationalised in the 1970s. British Leyland experienced a number of difficulties in the following years and was eventually broken up, with a number of its constituent companies being sold off.

The car industry in Borehamwood declined sharply from this point onwards, with Austin's factory being closed in 1980 and Morris's factory being closed in 1987. Today, there are no major car manufacturers based in Borehamwood, although a number of smaller businesses continue to operate in the area.
