History of the car industry in Harrow

The car industry in Harrow can be traced back to the early 1900s when a number of small engineering companies were set up in the area. One of the first was the Harrow Motor Company, which was established in 1903. The company produced a range of small cars, including the Harrow Model T, which was popular with local residents.

The car industry in Harrow really took off in the 1920s, when a number of large factories were built in the area. One of the most notable was the Ford Motor Company's plant at Dagenham, which began production in 1931. The factory produced a range of popular models, including the Model A and the Model T.

During the Second World War, the car industry in Harrow was focused on the production of military vehicles. The Ford factory at Dagenham produced a range of trucks and jeeps for the British Army, while other companies in the area produced parts for aircraft and tanks.

After the war, the car industry in Harrow entered a period of decline. The Ford factory at Dagenham closed in 1962, and a number of other companies followed suit. This led to a decline in the local economy, and the area became known for its high levels of unemployment.

The car industry in Harrow began to recover in the early 21st century, with a number of new companies opening factories in the area. These include Jaguar Land Rover, which opened a plant at Halewood in 2001, and Nissan, which opened a factory at Sunderland in 1986.
