History of the car industry in Stalybridge

The car industry in Stalybridge can be traced back to the early years of the 20th century when a number of small engineering companies were established in the town. One of the first was the Stalybridge Carriage Company, which was founded in 1904. The company produced a range of horse-drawn carriages and vehicles for the local market.

In the years following the First World War, the company diversified into the production of commercial vehicles and buses. In the 1920s, the company was acquired by the Leyland Motors group and became part of the British Leyland empire.

The car industry in Stalybridge flourished in the years after the Second World War. A number of new factories were established in the town, including the Austin Motor Company and the Rootes Group. The town also became home to a number of specialist engineering firms, such as gearbox manufacturer David Brown.

The car industry in Stalybridge went into decline in the late 20th century as a result of the recession and the rise of foreign competition. Many of the town's car factories closed down and the area became increasingly reliant on the service sector. However, the town still retains a strong engineering heritage and is home to a number of small engineering firms.
