In the 1920s, the Dury brothers sold their business to a consortium of local businessmen. The new company, Thatcham Motor Panels, continued to manufacture car bodies but struggled to compete with the larger national companies.

The company went into receivership in 1931 and was bought by a group of workers who formed a cooperative. The cooperative flourished and in the 1950s, Thatcham Motor Panels became one of the largest suppliers of car bodies in the UK.

In the 1960s, the cooperative was wound up and the business was taken over by a private company. The new owners concentrated on the production of specialist car bodies and the company prospered.

In the 1980s, the company was taken over by a larger conglomerate and the new owners decided to close the Thatcham factory. This led to the loss of over 1000 jobs and was a devastating blow to the town.
