Rolls-Royce
Rolls-Royce was founded in Derby in 1906 by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. The company was initially based in a small factory on London Road.
In 1907, the first Rolls-Royce car, the Silver Ghost, was unveiled at the London Motor Show. The Silver Ghost was an instant success and quickly established Rolls-Royce as a leading luxury car manufacturer.
In 1931, Rolls-Royce acquired the struggling car manufacturer Bentley. Bentley was based in Derby and the acquisition helped to secure Rolls-Royce's position as the pre-eminent luxury car maker in the UK.
During the Second World War, Rolls-Royce's Derby factory was converted to produce aircraft engines for the war effort. The factory produced over 16,000 aircraft engines during the conflict.
In the postwar years, Rolls-Royce continued to prosper and in 1971 the company was nationalised by the UK government.
In 1987, Rolls-Royce was privatised and the company was subsequently sold to Vickers in 1999.
Jaguar
Jaguar was founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company. The company was based in Coventry but moved to Browns Lane in Coventry in 1928.
In 1945, the company was renamed Jaguar Cars Ltd. In the 1950s and 1960s, Jaguar became synonymous with luxury and success thanks to a string of iconic cars such as the XK120, the E-Type and the Mk II.
In 1968, Jaguar was merged with British Leyland. However, the company continued to struggle and in the 1980s it was sold to the US company Ford.
In 2008, Ford sold Jaguar to the Indian company Tata. Jaguar is currently headquartered in Coventry.
Land Rover
Land Rover was founded in 1948 by Rover. The first Land Rover vehicle was the Series I, which was unveiled at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948.
The Series I was an instant success and quickly established Land Rover as a leading manufacturer of off-road vehicles. In the 1950s and 1960s, Land Rover expanded its range with the introduction of the Series II and Series III.
In 1970, Land Rover was merged with British Leyland. However, the company continued to struggle and in the 1980s it was sold to the US company Ford.
In 2008, Ford sold Land Rover to the Indian company Tata. Land Rover is currently headquartered in Gaydon, Warwickshire.
