Rochester car sales are fairly steady throughout the year. However, they do tend to increase in the summer months. This is likely due to the fact that many people are taking vacations and road trips during this time.

In 1841, the first steam-powered car was built in Rochester, New York, by George Brayton. The car was powered by a steam engine and was the first of its kind in the United States. Brayton's car was not successful, and he eventually abandoned the project. In 1877, George Selden, a Rochester lawyer, filed a patent for a gasoline-powered car. Selden's patent was approved in 1895, and he began manufacturing cars in Rochester in 1896. Selden's company, the Rochester Gasoline Engine Company, was the first car company in Rochester. The company was later renamed the Selden Motor Company. In 1905, the Selden Motor Company was sold to the William E. Metzger Company. Metzger continued to produce cars under the Selden name until 1909. In 1910, the Selden factory was sold to the E-M-F Company. The E-M-F Company was later renamed the Studebaker Corporation. Studebaker manufactured cars in Rochester until 1920, when the company closed its Rochester factory.
