History of the car industry in Accrington

The car industry in Accrington can be traced back to the early years of the 20th century, when a local company called Hoyle & Sons began manufacturing cars. The company was later taken over by the Accrington Motor Company, which produced a range of cars under the Accrington brand until it went out of business in the late 1920s.

After a period of time without a car manufacturer, the town was home to the British arm of the American company Kaiser-Frazer from 1946 to 1949. During this period, the company produced a small number of cars under the Kaiser and Frazer brands.

In the 1950s, the British government decided to create a number of new towns across the country, including one at Accrington. As part of this development, a new car factory was built in the town, which began production in 1959. The factory was originally owned by the British Motor Corporation (BMC), but was later taken over by British Leyland (BL).

During the 1960s and 1970s, the factory produced a number of popular cars, including the Austin/Morris 1100/1300 range, the Austin Allegro and the Rover SD1. However, by the early 1980s, the British car industry was in decline and the Accrington factory was closed in 1986.
