There are a few car dealerships in Wellington, but most people tend to buy their cars online or through dealerships in other cities. The main thing to keep in mind when buying a car in Wellington is that the prices are generally high, so it's important to do your researchand be prepared to negotiate.
The car industry in Wellington can be traced back to the early days of European settlement, when a number of small coachbuilders and carriage-makers set up shop in the city. The first motor vehicles were imported into New Zealand in the late 1800s, and by the early 1900s there were a number of local manufacturers producing cars and trucks.
The Wellington car industry really took off in the 1920s, when a number of large assembly plants were established. During the 1930s and 1940s, the industry went through a period of consolidation, with a number of smaller firms going out of business.
The 1950s and 1960s were boom years for the Wellington car industry, with a number of new manufacturers setting up shop, and production reaching record levels. However, the industry began to decline in the 1970s, as a result of the oil crisis and the recession.
A number of Wellington car manufacturers closed their doors in the 1980s and 1990s, and by the turn of the century, the industry was in a very different state to what it had been just a few decades earlier. Today, there are only a handful of car assembly plants remaining in Wellington, and the city is no longer the centre of the New Zealand car industry.
